Young Snowy Owl, Churchill, Manitoba

Snowy Owls breed in the barren lands of the far north, in an area void of trees and even bushes. When their food supply dwindles in fall, first the young and then adults migrate south, often passing through Churchill on their way to more productive hunting grounds. This bird was seen in September, before the snow arrived. It can be identified as a juvenile, because there is much black spotting. Old males cab be almost completely white.
