Black Caiman, Small Lake along Napo River

We watched this juvenile caiman swim across a lake early one morning and took our dugout canoe towards the shore where it had disappeared. Even though this crocodilian is normally nocturnal, it surfaced quite close to the boat, giving us excellent looks. The Black Caiman was hunted to near extinction for its valuable hide, until protected by laws and enforcement.
