Description
Blue (Arctic) Fox Cub, St. Paul Island, Alaska
Arctic foxes come in two phases: the usual white phase (winter coat) and the rare blue phase. Blue phase foxes do not change to white in the winter, but rather just a lighter tone of blue-grey. I found this cub near its den on my first night on St. Paul, just a hundred yards or so from a USCG LORAN station. I was between the cub and its denning hole, so was able to photograph it for several minutes before stepping aside and allowing it to bolt for its mother.
