Architect James Hoban designed the White House during Washington's presidency, but it was not occupied until 1800 when John Adams moved in. It has survived two major fires, in 1814 during the War of 1812 and again in 1929. The White House has 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, and 147 windows on six levels.
