Description
USMC Memorial, Arlington, Virginia
During World War II, U.S. Marines captured the tiny island of Iwo Jima, some 660 miles south of Tokyo. Famed war photographer Joe Rosenthal caught the flag being raised on Mt. Suribachi in what became probably the most famous photograph of the war. The 78 foot tall statue was dedicated on November 10, 1954, the 179th anniverary of the USMC. It sits on a hill in Arlington, overlooking the city, adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery.
