A Purple Swamp Hen wades through the water at Green Cay Wetlands. Swamp Hens are common across Eurasia, but were introduced to Florida. They were first noticed at Pembroke Pines in 1996 and reproduced rapidly. The state attempted to eradicate this species before it became established, but this effort failed and was terminated. Swamp Hens can now be found in many fresh water locations in southern Florida.
