American Pika, Mount Evans, Colorado

Pika are fascinating rodents that, unlike most of their contemporaries, do not hibernate at all even in the coldest climates. They spend the late summer creating hay piles that are later stored in their rock tunnels. They feed on this hay as bitter cold winds blow above them in the winter. They generally live only at 8000 feet elevation and higher.
