Black-tailed Prairie Dog, Arvada, CO

Unlike most other rodents that live in cold country, this animal does not hibernate, but rather remains active throughout the winter. It remains in family groups, like this one, and somehow finds enough nutrition in dried grasses to sustain its self until new growth begins in the spring.
