Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Dawn, Washington

The Vietnam Memorial was designed by Maya Ying Lin, an architectual student at the time. Her design was highly controversial and initially opposed by many veterans, but ultimately built as designed and dedicated in 1982. Two additional statues — one of three soldiers and one honoring women in Vietnam — were later added. 3.8 million people visited this memorial last year.
