National World War II Memorial, Washington

Architect Friedrick St. Florian won the design competition for this long overdue memorial. Although initially controversial, the final design was approved by the two official commissions in 2000. The memorial was dedicated in May 2004. It honors the 400,000 who died as well as the 16 million who served in the US armed forces. This image was made before the monument was dedicated.
