Willow Ptarmigan undergo three complete molts. In October, the brown and yellow feathers of summer are replaced by pure white, so that by the time snow covers the landscape, the birds are beautifully camouflaged. Note the feathers on the feet of this bird, allowing it to walk across even the lightest of snow.
