Polar bears come off the ice as it is melting, usually in July. For the remainder of the summer, they wander around, usually fasting, and lose substantial body weight. They are not land carnivores and lack the skills to catch, for example, caribou. Rather than chasing caribou, sometimes it is just easier to sit around and contemplate!
