Hoary Marmot, Denali National Park

The woodchuck of the far north, this animal lives in rocky slopes in the NW part of the continent. It can hibernate for seven or eight months. In early spring, grizzly bears may dig it out of its burrow while it is still asleep. It whistles very loudly and indeed has been called “Whistler.”
